I have been using Kobalt 24V tools for a very long time now, they have helped me complete my daily DIY projects at home, and they have never disappointed me until yesterday when the battery was running low.
I decided to charge it up, but the charger gave me the red flashing code, which meant the battery was dead and was not being charged. At first, I thought there was an issue with the charger, so I even tried using a different charger, but I faced the same issue.
I realised that it was an issue with my Kobalt 24V battery, and it needed a reset. So here are 3 ways to reset your Kobalt 24V battery, which will help you fix any problems that you might be facing or when the charger shows a red flashing code.
And before I forget, I have also made a video about this topic which you can watch below.
In the video, I showed how I reset my Kobalt 24V battery using another healthy Kobalt battery, a similar healthy battery from another brand, and by using a a DC power supply.
3 Simple But Effective Ways to Reset a Kobalt 24V Battery
Method 1: Reset Using Another 24V Kobalt Battery
1. Take a healthy 24V Kobalt battery and identify the negative and positive terminals on the top of the battery. These terminals are indicated by a + and – symbol on the Kobalt 24V batteries.
2. Then, use a male-to-male jumper cable to connect the positive terminal of the healthy battery to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the negative terminal of the healthy battery to the negative terminal of the dead battery.
3. Leave both of the batteries connected for 15 seconds and then disconnect the terminals from each other. This will leave the dead battery with enough voltage to be charged to be recognised by the charger and be charged again.
Method 2: Reset Using a Different Brand of Battery
1. If you don’t have the same Kobalt 24V battery lying around the charge up your dead battery. Don’t worry, you can use the battery of other brands, such as Dewalt or Hercules, to transfer some voltage to your Kobalt 24V battery.
2. First, identify the positive terminals of both batteries. These are usually indicated by + and – symbols, but some batteries might also use symbols such as B+ and B-. Identify the right terminals using the battery manual or by using the internet.
3. Then use a male-to-male jumper cable to connect the positive terminals of the Kobalt battery to the healthy battery, and do the same for the negative terminal by connecting negative to negative terminals of both batteries.
4. Leave the two batteries connected for at least 15 seconds and then disconnect them. This will leave enough power in the dead battery to be charged again and also reset it.
Method 3: Reset Using a DC Power Supply
1. If you have a DC power machine at home, you can easily revive your dead Kobalt 24V battery. Set the voltage to 24V and the current to 2 amperes. This will match the requirements of your Kobalt 24V battery.
2. Connect the negative terminal of the Kobalt 24V battery to the negative terminal of the power supply and the positive terminal to the positive output of the power supply.
3. Leave them connected for 15 seconds, and your battery will be restarted.
When Do You Need to Reset Your Kobalt 24v Battery?
You might want to restart your Kobalt 24V battery when it is not being charged and the charger shows the red flashing light code. This problem might occur when the battery is used for a prolonged time and the battery’s voltage drops too low for the charger to even recognise it.
It’s very important to know the different meanings of the indicator lights on a Kobalt battery charger, so I also made a short video about this topic. You can watch it below.
A blinking green means the battery is charging fine and this will turn into a solid green when the battery becomes fully charged. A blinking red means a hot/cold delay and last but not the least, a solid red indicates a bad battery.
Jumping it and pumping in some voltage in the battery using another healthy battery or power supply can help add some voltage to the battery, hence fixing it. Just follow the methods above and reset your Kobalt 24V battery.
