Kobalt Battery Charger Solid Red Light: The Solution I Recommend

The other day I was working with my Kobalt power tools to get things fixed in my backyard but then suddenly my battery bailed on me. I quickly went inside the house thinking it would be a perfect time to take a break too.

I got my Kobalt battery charger and to my surprise the charger showed me a red solid light.

This was not the usual flashing green light I was meant to see, I knew something was wrong and after quickly getting through the manual of the Kobalt charger I found the fix.

I’ve also made my own video in which I showed how to fix this problem. You can watch the video below.

For hot delay, let the battery cool down naturally in a shaded spot. For cold delay, take the battery to a warmer environment and wait until it reaches a safe charging temperature.

If it’s still showing solid red light at room temperature, then you can try to reset the Kobalt battery.

What to Do When Your Kobalt Battery Charger Is Flashing a Solid Red Light

But here is the deal: what do you do when the Kobalt battery charger gives red solid light even after reaching the normal temperature?

Wait Until the Battery Reaches Room Temperature

Wait Until the Battery Reaches Room Temperature

Apparently, the Kobalt battery has a safety feature that uses the sensor inside the battery (thermistor) to tell the charger if its safe to charge or not.

As I mentioned I was using my battery outside and continuously for 1 hour it generated heat inside the battery and refused to charge.

This feature will also kick in if your battery is too cold, so next time you forget your battery in the snow cold temperature outside, expect it to act like this.

The best solution to get rid of the hot and cold delay on the Kobalt charger? Well, just leave it a cool room if it’s hot and wait for it to get to room temperature.

What I Did When the Hot/Cold Delay Wouldn’t Go Away

Now here is the weird part, sometimes even after the battery has reached a normal temperature the charger will keep showing you a red light for hot and cold delay.

I identified the + and - terminals on the battery.

So what did I do when this happened to me? Very simple, a quick reset fixed the issue for me and should do it for you too. Here is how to do it.

1. I grabbed a perfectly fine fully charged Kobalt battery, any other brand of battery will also work for the reset just to make sure the voltages are similar. Then I identified the + and – terminals on the battery.

2. Then, I connected both the batteries (dead and healthy) together using a male to male jumper cable, positive to positive and negative to negative. I let them sit connected for about 15 seconds before disconnecting them.

3. The battery was reset even before I knew it and it was charging like new again. Follow the same steps to reset your battery and make the error go away.

You know it’s very important to know the different meanings of the indicator lights on your Kobalt battery charger. I’ve also made a short video about this which you can watch below.

A green blinking light means the battery is charging fine. This will become a solid green when it becomes fully charged. And as mentioned earlier, a red blinking light means a hot or cold delay. Lastly, a solid red means a bad battery.
