Even if your entire vacuum is functional, a Dyson cordless vacuum won’t turn on if its trigger is not working. The trigger is what’s responsible for letting the motor know it’s time to start.
This is just one of the common Dyson vacuum problems which you can troubleshoot without going to the repair shop.
But, when the trigger isn’t working, it can’t do its duty, and the motor won’t turn on as a result. So, let’s fix this little mess and get your Dyson vacuum back to working again.

Trigger Not Working On Cordless Dyson Vacuum (3 Causes)
- Press The Handle On The Battery
Grab your cordless Dyson vacuum with the battery attached to its handle, and press the handle down by force towards the battery. With the handle pressed down on the battery, give the trigger a push.
If pushing the handle and battery together works, that means there’s a faulty connection somewhere between the two components. It could be an out-of-shape wire, or something else.
I think the best bet is to replace the handle entirely or send it to Dyson for repairs. But, a temporary solution can also be to use tape and tightly bind both the battery and handle together.
Use a strong, thick tape that won’t move or break with too much use. Make sure to leave an open end as well, so you know where to pull the tape from and take it off when the battery needs charging.

This isn’t a very efficient fix for this issue, but it will hold you over for as long as it takes the replacement part to arrive.
- Broken Trigger Mechanism
Most of the components on Dyson’s vacuums are pretty durable. I can say the same about my Dyson V11, which has been serving me for a long time.
But, there’s a known fault with the trigger on some of these vacuums. It’s made of a weak material that doesn’t last long, especially on the V11. This causes the trigger to break on the inside.
If you use some tools to inspect inside the area where the vacuum’s trigger is situated, you might see that a piece fell off of your trigger. It might be a bit of chipping, or there could be a whole chunk missing.
When this happens, you’ll notice that it’s hard to press down on the trigger, like I’m doing in the picture below. That’s because the trigger has lost its original motion since it doesn’t have the same shape anymore.
Something like this happened to me once, and I was able to fix it by just using some super glue.
You could do the same thing, or use a glue gun if you have one of those instead. Use the glue to fill up the missing chunk of your Dyson vacuum’s trigger.
Once it’s filled, set the trigger aside so it can dry. Then level the surface of the dried glue using sandpaper, and place it back into the device. That will return it to its normal shape and function!
You know your Dyson vacuum functions normally when it sucks and pulses as it should. If it doesn’t do this, then it has a problem.
I have a video how you can solve this problem and you can watch it below.
Disassemble parts of the Dyson vacuum to check for any blockage. If you are sure that there is no blockage at the main parts, the problem is due to the dirty filter.
Clean the filter with water to remove most of the dirt that accumulates in the filter. Dry the filter before you install it back to the Dyson vacuum.
- Need To Replace The Trigger
If my little workaround from the previous solution doesn’t work, or if your trigger mechanism is completely broken into pieces, you’ll need to purchase a replacement part.
It’s the only way to get around this issue, as your Dyson vacuum’s old trigger can’t function anymore even with glue. Luckily, this won’t cost you much at all.
This trigger piece I’m pointing at in the image above is actually not that expensive. You just have to know what exact type of trigger your Dyson vacuum needs, and you’ll be able to find it online easily.
Order it when you see the one you need, and replace your current trigger with it. The new trigger won’t have any problems of the old one, and you can use your Dyson vacuum freely now!
