If your Dyson vacuum is working completely fine but the cleaner wand specifically is not functioning, it’s usually because of a leak or a blockage. But, those aren’t the only potential problems.
I want to tell you about all the possible reasons for this, so you don’t miss anything important and can get your Dyson vacuum back to full functionality again. Just read the list below!
Dyson Vacuum Cleaner Wand Not Working (Resolved)
- Blocked Wand
The most obvious reason is the one I want you to explore first. Blockages in a cleaner wand are really common since large things that the wand sucks up can stick to the inside.
If you recently used your vacuum to suck up small rags, plastic bags, or anything else of the sort, they might have gotten stuck inside the wand. They need to be removed for the wand to work again.
To show you what this looks like, I used my wand to clean up a bunch of tissues. It was able to suck up most of them, but as I thought, a couple of tissues got stuck inside. Here’s what that looked like:
This isn’t a big problem though. Just detach your cleaner wand from its vacuum. Then, look deep inside to see if there’s anything blocking the way like in my photo above.
Pull it out, and that should fix your vacuum cleaner wand.
A blocked airway can cause your Dyson vacuum not to work. You might also encounter a situation when its display will say “Airways Blocked” but you don’t see anything which blocks the airway.
I have made a video about how you can fix this problem. You can watch it below.
First, disconnect the parts and check if there is anything that blocks the airway. If you don’t see any blockage, the problem can be caused by a dirty filter.
Remove the filter and clean it, then install it back to the vacuum and retry. If it is still not working, use water to clean the filter again.
Make sure you dry the filter thoroughly before you install it back to the Dyson vacuum.
- Leaks/Damages
Speaking of looking at the wand, two more things you should watch out for are leaks and damages. Both these things can develop on a wand over time, especially if it collides too much with its surroundings.
It might start chipping around its connection points, or develop tiny holes across its surface. In either case, these types of damages will allow air to leak out. That causes reduced suction.
So, do as I said in the picture above. You should be able to see any damages or hear them when the device is on as there’ll be a faint sound of air leaking out.
Less suction leads to the wand working much worse than usual. Unfortunately, a damaged cleaner wand will likely have to be replaced, unless the damage is small enough to be taped.
- Use Electrical Contact Cleaner
Electrical contacts are what allow power to flow through connected attachments of the Dyson vacuum. That means any problem with them might stop a specific attachment from working.
So, I think your cleaner wand might have a dirty contact that you need to deal with.
These contacts are easy to clean, but you need a suitable electrical contact cleaner for it. Once you have one, rub it across the point behind the area I highlighted in this photo:
Once the contacts are clean, attach the cleaner wand back to your Dyson vacuum’s main component. With a suitable connection, this attachment should be working for you again!
- Weak Motor
It might just be that your cleaner wand isn’t to blame at all. Instead, the problem lies with the motor of your Dyson vacuum.
Motors can get weaker with age, or after they get too dirty. It’s a common thing for a lot of vacuums. You might have noticed that some of these devices lose their full suction strength over the years.
I believe you should try to give it a good cleaning to see if that helps. Try to suck the dirt out of it, and wipe a cloth around it so that dirt inside and outside is goes away.
If that doesn’t work though, you might need to replace it with a new motor that’s at full strength. That will get all your attachments, including the cleaner wand, working again.
