Getting a motor problem on your Black and Decker string trimmer can be really troublesome. These motors are expensive, sensitive, and their troubleshooting is usually delicate.

But, I can steer you on the right path to get it working again. I’ve dealt with a lot of motor issues on Black and Decker trimmers, so let me share my experience with them.

Fixing A Motor Problem On Your Black and Decker Trimmer

  1. Get Rid of Clogs

String trimmers get really dirty because of yard work. It’s pretty understandable since they get so close to dirt, rubble, and junk in yards. All these things can find their way inside components of the machine, though.

The image below shows the inside components of a Black and Decker trimmer.

The motor is especially prone to hazards like this. Pieces of grass, dirt, and more that go flying eventually start squeezing into crevices inside the motor. This waste starts to build up inside.

Eventually, your motor is going to get to a point where the waste is too much for it to function properly. Its path will be blocked, meaning it won’t have room to spin and function.

Dirt around your motor will almost always mean it’s clogged or is about to be clogged. Take a look at the motor on the Black and Decker trimmer in this photo, for example. See how dirty it is?

Similar dirt build-ups are probably inside the motor too. They will reduce the functions of the motor, and the string trimmer as a whole will function less effectively.

But, it’s as easy as cleaning inside and around the motor to fix this! Use tools to open the motor’s casing and clean thoroughly across its insides. Make sure that the outside is clean too.

  1. Overheating Stoppages

Another common problem is overheating, which is also usually caused by not cleaning your string trimmer often. But, it can also be a result of using the device too much.

Even using the device moderately but in hot temperatures can lead to overheating. In short, there are a bunch of reasons why it can happen. But, in every scenario, the outcome is the same.

I also have a video about how you can fix your Black and Decker trimmer if its motor stopped working. You can watch it below.

As you can see, it’s not just overheating which can cause the motor to stop working. It can be because of faulty motor, not enough voltage, faulty trigger or a faulty line push button.

Because of overheating, the motor can shut itself down.

It completely stops working as a way to protect it from sustaining damage because of super high temperatures. It’s helpful but also leads to the device fully stopping.

If you suspect that your Black and Decker trimmer has overheated, your only option is to do as I said in the picture above.

For future reference, I want you to avoid using the device too much. Don’t let it stay in the heat for a long time. Take care that it doesn’t overheat by doing so, and that should help avoid this.

  1. Weak Battery

If you ruled out the first two common issues, I suggest you take a look at the battery. The motor on Black and Decker string trimmers takes a lot of power to function.

When it can’t receive a suitable amount of power, it can’t work like it needs to. By this, I don’t mean a dead battery. I just mean a battery that’s gotten weaker with age.

You can try to reset the battery if its not charging as it should be. The video I’ve made below shows the steps how you can do this.

It happens to Black and Decker batteries the same way as any other battery. Their capacity to hold and transfer charges gets worse with age, and there isn’t anything you can do about it, unfortunately.

After two years or so of use, most Black and Decker batteries will lose their full functionality. At that point, they might become too weak to properly power the motor, which is why you’re having this issue.

So, you need to determine whether your battery is too weak, dead, or having other issues with it. Usually, you can just do it by putting the device on charge like I have here.

charger indicator lights

Notice the lights in my photo. Those are indicators that tell you more about the condition of the battery.

If your Black and Decker battery is blinking red it obviously has a problem.

If these lights flash anything but green, or display an abnormal pattern, that means there’s an issue. You can also tell if there’s a problem with the battery by testing it with a multimeter.

If the power output is too low, you need to replace it so that the motor can function with enough charge.

I have made a video about replacing a Black and Decker trimmer motor. I showed there how to remove and replace the motor properly. You can watch it below.

  1. Dead Motor Component

Any component on any Black and Decker string trimmer can go bad. This includes the motor as well. If all my other tips aren’t helpful so far, I think you probably have a dead motor.

This happened to me recently too, and I had to purchase a new motor for my trimmer. You can see it in the photo below.

I suggest you contact Black and Decker about a new motor component, especially if your device is still under warranty. You could also find one online and use that to replace your current one.

A new motor won’t have any issues, and your trimmer will work flawlessly after you install it
