A few days ago, my Black and Decker drill was just not spinning no matter what I tried to do. So, I got down to do some troubleshooting and the issue was with the motor the whole time.
But, even though the problem may be similar, its answer isn’t always the same for everyone. If your B&D drill’s motor isn’t spinning either, there are a number of things that could help.
Fixing this problem would require you to disassemble your Black and Decker drill. I have a video here which shows how you can do it.
You need to remove lots of screws to remove the cover. After that, you’ll see all of its internal mechanism.
Reasons Black and Decker Drill Is Not Spinning
- Broken Trigger Mechanism
The trigger on your Black and Decker drill is super tiny. But, in the grand scheme of things, it’s the most important of them all. That’s because your entire drill depends on it.
If the trigger mechanism has any faults in it, it can’t let your drill know when it’s time to spin. That’s because the trigger lets the device know when it’s time to send power through.
So, my first suggestion is to take a good look at it. Three things in particular could be wrong or stopping the mechanism.
The first of these things is the trigger lock, which you should turn off. This is basically a safety that stops the trigger from working until the lock is off.
Even if you press it down like I’m doing in the picture down there, nothing will happen. It’s there to protect users from accidentally starting the drill and hurting themselves.
The second thing I want to talk about is what I mentioned in the photo. There shouldn’t be too much or too little force on the switch when you try to click it.
This usually implies that there’s a lot of dirt around the trigger, or a fault in one of its springs. This leads to blockages that cause too much force, or a fault that leads to too little resistance.
In either of these cases, you will have to take apart the casing of your Black and Decker drill’s handle. After that, carefully clean around the trigger’s mechanism.
Check for any strings that have damage or bad positioning too. They also lead to faulty triggers.
Lastly, I want you to try to press the trigger and see if there’s some kind of sound. If you hear a strange click, it could be because the trigger is broken. Your best bet is to replace it in that case.
Your Black and Decker drill also comes with a reverse switch that allows it to spin clockwise and anticlockwise. In some instances, you could also encounter a problem with this.
I have made a video about how you can solve the problem with the reverse switch of your Black and Decker drill. You can watch it down below.
The switch is certainly jammed inside so you need to remove the cover of the drill and test the reverse switch with you hand. Then remove any object that may have blocked the reverse switch.
- Gears Misplaced
The head of your Black and Decker drill spins thanks to gears within the device. These gears power the movement of the drill head and control its speed.
But, if these gears are misaligned in any way, the entire mechanism just fails. All the gears don’t move properly anymore. Because of that, neither does the drill head on your device.
Luckily, they’re not that hard to spot. If you have a screwdriver, you can take apart the drill like I’m doing below. You want to do this until you reach the area around the head.
If you open this part up, you might find a gear that’s missing or slightly out of place. That’s the reason why your Black and Decker drill is not spinning.
Luckily, all you have to do is put that gear back into place. If it’s missing, look around inside that area and you should be able to find it.
If it’s dislodged, take it out. Give it a good cleaning across its sides, and then put it back in place. Now close the entire drill back the way it was, and press the trigger to see if it spins like it should.
- Dysfunctional Motor
It looks to me like your case is a lot more serious if the other two solutions weren’t enough. The motor on your Black and Decker drill might be dysfunctional.
You could also encounter this problem on your Black and Decker trimmer. You can read this article that I have written about how you can fix a motor problem on your Black and Decker trimmer.
It’s one of the most important parts of the drill because it powers all its functions. Without it, nothing will work even if all the other components are functioning.
So, maybe your drill isn’t spinning because of a dead motor. It’s not supplying enough power for the head to spin around, and it needs replacing.
The motor on Black and Decker drills is pretty easy to spot. If you take the covering off, it’s a large white component at the top. You can see it highlighted in this picture I took.
If you see or smell any burning on this motor or near it, that means it won’t work anymore 99% of the time. You have to get an entirely new one to replace it and power the drill.
Luckily, it’s easy to find them online. Installing them can be a bit difficult, but even if you struggle with it a repairperson should take care of it for you without hassle.
After you install a new motor, there will be proper power flowing through the drill, and its head should spin just right!
