Impact Wrench LED Light Stays ON & Won’t Turn Off (6 Causes)

Impact Wrench LED Light Stays ON Won’t Turn Off

The LED light on an impact wrench is one of its most helpful and underrated components in my opinion.

But, it can be pretty annoying if that same LED light stays on even after you not pressing the impact wrench trigger anymore.

This can eat up the battery of the device and making it not holding charge.

However, you can get around it by just removing the tool’s power supply/battery and forcing the light to turn off.

I know it can be annoying to do that every single time though, so let me walk you through some other things you can try instead.

  1. Trigger Is Stuck “On”

I think the first thing you should check is whether or not the trigger is stuck.

If it is, that would explain why the LED light stays on even when you aren’t using the device.

As shown in the image below, there should be a “Spring” inside the trigger that help to return the trigger to its original position after being pressed.

If the spring is broken, the trigger won’t be able to function properly.

The wiring around the trigger could be what’s making the light stay on too.

Faulty wiring usually leads to weird anomalies with any machine, and I think this is no exception.

So, I suggest checking these wires I highlighted to make sure they’re all in the right position, and not loose or damaged.

If there is any “Quick Connector” in your impact wrench trigger, just simply disconnect and reconnect it.

In a majority of impact wrenches, the LED light doesn’t have a button of its own and turns on automatically when you pull the trigger.

This is the case for my DeWalt impact wrench too.

  1. LED Light Wiring Problem

Speaking of wiring, the LED light’s own wiring could be to blame too, and not just the trigger’s as stated above.

The main example of this is on the connector for the LED light, which I’m holding here.

If the wiring on it is bad in any way, or attached wrong, the LED lights will malfunction.

They might stop turning on, or they might stay on whenever there’s power to the device, like what’s happening with you.

In either case, I suggest taking the cover off of your impact wrench and checking this connecter, as well as its surrounding wires, for any problems.

The wires I highlighted in the image above should be in the right place, and not have any damage or loose ends.

  1. Short Circuit

Short circuit can also cause a light to stay on all the time.

Moisture seeping into the device or a number of other reasons can cause short circuits.

They’re not that uncommon with impact wrenches, and I’ve experienced a few myself.

My impact wrench isn’t waterproof, since it’s not fully sealed and some components are exposed because of that.

Yours is probably the same, especially if you own a DeWalt. That’s why I recommend you keep these devices away from any water.

As you can see from the image below, there are motor vents that the moisture or water can enter easily.

As for the circuit board, you have to take the cover off the tool and check each individual circuit board for any burns or damage.

Once you find the problematic board, you have to get it suitably replaced.

  1. Interference

Some impact wrenches have failsafe mechanisms that let them “sense” interference, like sudden movements or unnecessary impacts.

When this happens, a number of things can happen. In some instances, the LED light turns on.

One example of this is when putting a socket on the anvil of impact wrench.

This process causes the LED light to turn on if the battery is attached, which is always strange.

Also, are you using any external adaptor on the anvil?

This could be the possible reason too.

For example, I did use external adaptor when I convert the impact wrench and use it as impact driver.

  1. Check If It Has Any Spring Loaded Ball Inside The Impact Mechanism

Inspect the impact mechanism of your tool to see if there’s a spring loaded ball or sensor inside.

If there is, this sensor is likely an automatic switch for the LED light and the reason why your light stays on.

My DeWalt impact wrench doesn’t have a sensor or spring loaded ball bearing, but other impact wrenches do, so make sure to check yours.

The sensor could be faulty and needs replaced if your device has one.

  1. Just Wait

Some impact wrench lights actually just stay on for a while even after you turn them off.

I recommend that you just set it aside. Come back after 60 seconds or a few minutes to see if the LED is still on.

That might actually be what you needed to do all this time, and I hope it is so that you don’t have to deal with this problem anymore!
