How do you plan on using a power tool if its trigger isn’t working? Well, that’s the thing; you can’t. Without the trigger, you can’t control the tool and how it works.

You know exactly how annoying that is if you’re going through trigger problems of your own. Hopefully, though, I can help with DeWALT impact driver trigger problems in particular with the tips down here.

3 Solutions For DeWALT Impact Driver Trigger Problems

  1. Make It DeWALT’s Problem

Trigger issues aren’t common at all, especially not with newer tools. If you recently bought a DeWALT impact driver and it’s having issues with the trigger, that’s likely a manufacturing flaw.

Don’t let that be your headache, though. Problems like that are something that DeWALT will deal with for you, as all new tools you buy from them will have a warranty.

So, my first troubleshooting tip is, ironically, to not troubleshoot at all. If your impact driver is new and this is happening, claim the warranty on it instead. That’s the ideal solution!

claim warranty if dewalt impact driver is new

I put this on here first since tampering with the DeWALT impact driver is going to void its warranty. Why make the effort to fix something if it might end up losing you money for no good reason?

Leave that up to DeWALT instead, as it’s a much safer and more reliable option. They’ll get the trigger working again, or send you a new impact driver with a functioning trigger mechanism.

The DeWALT impact driver is a high quality tool and manufacturing issues are rare. I have made a short demo video about how to use this tool and you can watch it below.

On this demo I conducted with a DeWALT DCF787 Impact Driver , I showed how to drive short and long screw into the wood. I also showed how to drive a long bolt into the wood.

I also showed its other uses like using a step drill bit to drill through the iron plate and drilling through concrete with small and big bit.

  1. Trigger Mechanism Is Jammy

Two exact types of trigger problems could be going on. The more common of the two is when the trigger mechanism feels like it isn’t moving around freely.

The movement feels like it’s restricted in a way. Well, that’s because it is! Something is getting in the way of the mechanism, and that’s what’s causing this.

It doesn’t even have to be anything all that bad. Just some dirt can cause issues with the trigger mechanism and stop it from pressing all the way. That’s why cleaning is important.

Look at how I have my DeWALT impact driver open in the picture above. That’s what you need to do too. This will make it much easier to see what’s stopping the trigger.

You can get a closer look at things and clean it up all at the same time. Use some compressed air to blow away any dirt, and rub the surface with a cloth to really seal the deal.

After that, put the covers back on and test to see if it still feels as restrictive. There shouldn’t be any issues after you get all the debris out which was jamming the trigger.

  1. Nothing Happens When I Press The Trigger

Nothing happens after you press the trigger.

The other problem is when nothing happens after you press the trigger. Even though there’s no restriction in its movement, it just isn’t working as it should.

Wiring is the main reason for this. Some particular wires on your DeWALT impact driver are what transfer power to the motor whenever you press the trigger.

If they start malfunctioning, nothing will happen no matter how much you press down. So, check to see if these wires are still transferring power as they’re meant to.

faulty wires connected to trigger mechanism

A multimeter will tell you which wires are transferring power properly, and which ones aren’t. You’ll obviously need replacements for the faulty ones to get the DeWALT impact driver working again.

While this isn’t an expensive issue to handle, it is an annoying one because it’s difficult to manage the wires. But, once you replace them properly, the trigger will work each time you press it!
