Compared to many other tools on offer from the brand, Black and Decker’s hand vacuums are much simpler devices. Even the battery is built-in, and there aren’t usually any issues.
But, the problem with a built-in battery is that when there ARE issues, they’re tough to deal with. If you’re having a problem with your Black and Decker hand vacuum not charging, give these suggestions a go.
3 Reasons Why A Black and Decker Hand Vacuum Is Not Charging
- Is The Charger At Fault?
Not a lot can go wrong with hand vacuums. They’re compact, not easy to open up, and designed to last long. Heck, I’d say their chargers have just as much of a chance of developing issues as they do.
Confirm if that’s true or not by testing out another charger with the tool. If you don’t have a spare, try to see if a local shop might have one you can try out, or if you can borrow it from someone.
There’s two ways that this can go, and either one will be defining. One way is that the spare charger will work, which means there’s an issue with your current charger, and not the hand vacuum.
Secondly, there’s the chance that even a spare charger can’t get your Black and Decker hand vacuum to charge. This will confirm that the issue is with the tool itself, and not its charger.
I put a picture up there that shows my hand vacuum’s charger working just fine. The light is on, and it’s clearly functioning. Before doing anything else, confirm that the same goes for your charger too.
In case the current charger you have ends up being faulty, you’ll need to purchase a new one. There’s no way to fix a bad charger, at least not in any way that’s worth it, as it likely has wire damage.
Is the charger not to blame and this doesn’t apply to you? Then, in that case, check out the other two solutions instead since they’re the only ways to deal with a Black and Decker hand vacuum that’s not charging.
- Replace The Battery Pack
Only sensible reason why it’s not charging is because of a bad battery pack inside. It’s no longer taking in a charge, which means it’s also not good enough to power the battery any longer.
An issue like this will also affect the performance of your Black and Decker hand vacuum. If it has a weak battery it will not pick up as it should so you really need to fix this problem as soon as possible.
Resolve this by changing the battery pack inside your Black and Decker hand vacuum. It’s much cheaper than getting repairs or buying a whole new vacuum, so why not give this a shot instead, right?
To start, I need you to confirm my theory that the battery pack really is dead. Get a multimeter and a screwdriver to do that, because we’re about to do some digging (inside the tool, not in the ground).
See the screw in the photo below? That’s just one of the screws on the casing of a Black and Decker hand vacuum. You’ll need to get all these off near the handle to expose the battery pack underneath.
Get all these screws out, and then you’ll be able to pick apart the covers. Use fingers to take the casing apart. After removing the plastic, you’ll see a block inside. This is the tool’s battery pack!
Split the pack open to reveal the individual cells inside. Now you’ll be needing that multimeter I mentioned earlier. Use it to check the voltage on each of the cells inside.
Ideally, each cell must read around 4.2 volts. That’s a good range for a cell inside this tool when it’s fully charged. However, if the multimeter reads 3.6 volts or below, that means the battery pack is dead.
Buy a new battery pack that goes with the tool and put it inside the tool instead. eBay or other online resale sites will have options. Retrace your steps after getting a new battery pack.
Connect it to the wires just as the old one was. After that, start closing the case and reapplying the screws. The new battery will get the Black and Decker hand vacuum charging again!
- Buy A New Hand Vacuum
If replacing the battery pack how I suggested sounds like too much trouble, the only other option is to buy a new hand vacuum. There’s no other way to get the tool charging again.
Getting a brand new Black and Decker hand vacuum is definitely going to be costly. But, if your current one already served you for a good amount of time, it’s likely time to buy a new one anyway.
I recently got a new one myself, which you can see in the image above. Sure, it’s a hefty price to pay for a hand vacuum. But, it’s arguably worth it for all that it offers in the long run.
A new tool won’t give nearly as much trouble. They’re a safe option if you have a Black and Decker hand vacuum that’s not charging and don’t mind spending some cash to replace it.
