💡Planning Tips
The roof pitch affect how much material you need because of the slope. It’s not something that a basic floor plan consider. To compensate for pitch, add about 12 percent for a 6:12 slope relative to what a flat plan would say. That means an additional cost and much heavier load on the structure.
Fortunately, the estimator on this page do all of the math for you. Simply measure the size of the building you’re going to tile. Pick the roof type. Then decide on its pitch. The estimator will use the proper pitch factor to determine the actual roof surface. And that’s important because everything else depend on that number.
How to Calculate Roof Materials Easily
The batten length will be too short, there are not enough rolls of underlayment. Wrong amount of tiles. Next, it will adjust for the profile of tile. Some profiles is larger or smaller than others. For example, large interlocking concrete tiles covers more square feet then a traditional two-piece barrel clay system. You can enter the amount of coverage per tile once it’s installed to account for sidelap, headlap and other factors that cause a need for fewer tiles.
Why does that matter? Manufacturers frequently list the physical size but not protected area. If you ignore this, your budget tend to fail. Another thing to consider is the waste factor. It all seems abstract until you’re up on some scaffolding, making hip rafters from pieces cut off a larger one. For a simple gable roof you might expect only an 8% waste allowance, that’s just for the cutting and breaking out. A more complex roof will include things like dormers, hips, and valleys, which can easily push your waste into the fifteen to twenty percent range.
Use this as a percentage and go higher if your roof is complicated. Better to have a few extras left over rather than having a hole above the chimney, waiting three weeks for another shipment in the rain. It also calculates quantities for supporting infrastructure such as underlayment, battens and ridge caps. Batten spacing should of been determined based off the desired tile profile, and it is typically 13-15″ on center. To determine ridge cap quantities, simply divide total length of hips and ridges by the exposure length of each individual cap piece. This will save you some time in the future when you’re exhausted from being outdoors all day and can’t find any more trim pieces.
Many people underestimate how much roof underlayment they need. Each roll covers 400 square feet but remember to include extra coverage where laps occur between each sheet. And don’t forget about the added layers needed on steep slopes (check with your local code). The calculator rounds up to give a complete coverage estimate.
