How I Reset Dyson Vacuum Battery

A few days ago when I wanted to use my Dyson vacuum, I put it on charge. Instead of charging like it usually would, though, there wasn’t a blue light and the battery was getting no power.

Nothing was happening at all. Naturally, I had to reset the Dyson vacuum battery in order to revive it. If you need help doing that, I’ll walk you through the steps I took to do it!

My Method To Reset a Dyson Vacuum Battery

The first thing I’ll always recommend to people going through this issue is to confirm if the charger is problematic. With Dyson vacuums, the charging dock can go bad and stop providing power.

To avoid going on a wild goose chase, check the charger first since it’s an easy thing to rule out. All you need for this is a multimeter. With that, you can check if it’s problematic or not.

Dyson vacuum batteries have a specific voltage they need to be at to power tools. The charger needs to provide a similar voltage so that the battery can have power in the first place.

Use a multimeter to check if it’s giving you as much (or more) voltage as the battery requires. You can see me taking a reading of my Dyson vacuum charger in the image down here.

voltage reading from charger

My Dyson vacuum has a battery of 25v in it. So, the reading in the image above is completely fine and proves that my charger isn’t the cause of the problem.

It’s working as it should, which means that the Dyson battery is faulty and not charging because of that. Now that I know that a reset is necessary, I’ll move on to the next step.

Try to measure the output voltage from the dyson battery.

For that, you’ll need a DC power supply. One that can provide more power than the battery’s voltage. That power supply is what’s necessary to revive the vacuum’s battery.

With all the tools I work with and how often I run into battery problems, I got a DC power supply for situations like this one. I can’t say it hasn’t been helpful!

In fact, I couldn’t recommend it enough to people that deal with battery issues regularly and want a guaranteed way to revive them. You can use it to revive any battery like this one.

When you get your hands on DC power supply, set it next to the Dyson battery like I have below. Power it up and make sure it’s running fine.

dyson battery with DC power supply

Connect all the necessary cables to your power supply. Most of the time, these cables should come with whatever power supply you end up purchasing.

Then, connect two jumper cables in each of the terminals on the Dyson vacuum battery. One of them goes on the positive terminal of the battery, and the other one goes on the negative terminal.

With the jumper cables on your battery’s terminals, attach the other end of them to the cables on your DC power supply. Make sure you connect the right wires to each other.

For example, the positive cable on the DC power supply should connect to the jumper cable on the positive terminal of your Dyson battery. The same goes for the negative ones.

Shift your attention towards the power supply after all the wires are dealt with. There should be three knobs on it. One for voltage, one for amp, and one for watts.

The next thing to do is to ramp up the voltage. Adjust the voltage knob to increase its value to what matches your Dyson vacuum battery. In my case, it was 25 volts, which you can see down there.

DC power supply set to 25v

Always set it to the exact value of the battery. Going any higher might permanently damage the cells inside, while going any lower won’t be enough to reset it.

After setting the voltage according to your battery, slowly start increasing the amp. Never go very fast while doing this, since a sudden increase will completely fry the battery.

You can see me turning up the amp in the image below this. Go little by little, until you finally reach 1.0 amps. Don’t go any higher than that to avoid damages.

slowly raise amp to 1

Don’t try to do this if you don’t know how to operate a DC power supply. It’s easy enough to do even on a first try, but only if you have enough knowledge about it.

After a 15 seconds at 1 amp, you can turn the DC power supply and take the cables off of your Dyson vacuum battery. That amount of time at that voltage should have been enough for a reset.

When you put the battery on its charger, the blue light should show up and it’ll work perfectly with your vacuum as the reset is complete!

  1. Hello, Unfortunately it doesn’t work on my battery. Is there a way to run the vacuum cleaner without batteries with just the power supply?
