Position Tolerance Calculator for GD&T Fits

🎯 Position Tolerance Calculator

Check true position, bonus tolerance, datum shift, and pass or fail for GD&T hole and pin layouts.

📌 Quick Presets
📈 Calculator Setup
True position is measured as the diameter of the location error. The calculator adds MMC or LMC bonus when the feature size moves in your favor.
Enter the actual coordinate offset and the feature size. The calculator uses the selected condition to decide whether bonus tolerance can be added to the zone.

💡 Practical Tips
Tip: Use one datum origin for both target and actual coordinates so the error vector stays meaningful.
Tip: Bonus tolerance only appears when the size moves toward the MMC or LMC condition.
Tip: If the safe margin is thin, recheck probe offset and fixture shift before release.
Tip: For patterns, inspect the worst hole first because one outlier can drive the whole part.
Safety Note
Never force a part into place if the true position or the measured size is near the limit. Recheck datum setup, probe offset, and actual size before assembly.

Position tolerance is a symbol of GD&T for tolerance of location. The True Position shows the exact coordinate or location that define the basic dimensions as nominal value GD&T use this tolerance to limit how the location of feature can vary from that perfect spot. It usually marks the ideal location by basic dimensions and the position tolerance controls if feature of size stays near the True Position.

Position tolerance you apply only in features of size. It helps in engineering designs specify the wanted location and the allowed deviation for position of feature on part. The tolerance limits the locatun of actual features like holes or surfaces regarding others or datums.

What Is Position Tolerance (True Position) in GD&T

Like this you avoid accumulation of tolerances by basic dimensions and zones.

For control position of round feature, the tolerance zone forms a cylinder whose central axis coincides with the ideal position of the central element. For instance, hole with position tolerance of 1 mm has round zone of radius 0.5 mm around the True Position. In GD&T position is a useful tolerance that controls for location, coaxiality, orientation or axis offset of part feature.

Simple sample gives set of holes for a name plate. Relative position of the holes matters with tight tolerances so that they match with the plate itself. Absolute the whole group on the part can have less severe limits if only orientation is good.

Design square wide and high in 0.005, then circle diameter in 0.005. The difference lies in the corners. True Position helps to beat traditional plus/minus tolerances because those do not intend separate deviations in two directions.

MMC and LMC give flexible tolerance combination. If hole intends 0.5 inches plus/minus 0.01 and the fact reaches 0.51 inches, so at MMC the position tolerance adds by extra 0.01 inches because it is too big. In machining tight position tolerances are difficult.

You with eight holes diameter in 0.001 tolerance between three datums struggled to keep it even after spotting, boring, interpolating and reaming. More severe tolerances cost more because of close preparation and more rejects.
