Last week, I grabbed my Metabo Cordless Drill to finish some quick repairs that I had started earlier, but I noticed that my battery was running low. It was not a big deal as this is a normal occurrence, but when I plugged in the Metabo HPT battery on the charger, I was greeted with fireworks of lights without knowing what they meant.
Was it charging? Was something wrong with the battery? I had no clue until I decided to unleash my inner nerd and research the meaning of the lights on the charger. It turns out these lights are more helpful than I thought.
I’ve also made a short YouTube video about this topic. You can watch it below before you continue reading this article.
A solid red means the battery is charging while a flashing red at medium speed means the battery is done charging.
If you see a flashing red at slow speed, this means the battery is too hot or cold to start charging. Lastly, a flashing red at a fast speed means the battery could be faulty.
Here Are the Different Meanings of Metabo HPT Battery Charger Indicator
There are 4 light codes that might be displayed on the Metabo HPT charger when you plug in your Metabo HPT Battery in the charger. While all the meanings of the lights are mentioned on the label of the charger they might not be very clear.
1. Steady Red – The Steady red and flashing green light code indicates that the battery is being charged normally, and the health of your Metabo HPT battery is good. Leave your battery charging for up to 1 hour to fully charge the battery.
2. Blinking Red (Medium Speed) – The Blinking Red at medium speed means that the Metabo HPT battery has been fully charged and is ready to be used again. The Metabo HPT battery charger will automatically stop the charging process to stop the battery from overcharging and damaging it.
3. Red Blinking (Slow Speed) – This light code means that the battery is either too hot or too cold to be charged. The Metabo HPT battery charger will show a red blinking code with a interval of 1 second on and 1 second off, which indicates that the battery is not being charged due to its temperature.
The user should put battery aside in a normal room temperature environment and wait 1 hour before trying to charge again.
4. Flashing Red (Fast Speed) – The flashing red code while the battery is plugged into the Metabo HPT battery charger indicates a bad battery condition. This might mean that the battery is not able to hold a charge or has a very low voltage. To fix this issue, you might have to reset the battery or even replace it with a new one.
I have made a short video in which I demonstrated the three methods to reset a Metabo HPT 18v battery. You can watch it down below.
First, you can reset using another Metabo HPT battery. Second, you can reset using a similar battery from another tool brand. Lastly, you can use a DC power source to reset the battery.
After understanding the meanings behind the lights displayed on the Metabo HPT charger, it was easier to understand what was really going on with my battery just by looking at the light indicator.
Whether the charging was full or the battery was too hot or too cold, I knew what it all meant. If you are like me and overlooked what these lights meant, I can assure you, it’s worth paying attention.
