Siding a home seems easy enough till you’re standing next to the wall with a tape measure. We have the length and width, right? But what about the soffit and eave? How do we make the math work there? What’s the big deal about face width vs exposure, shouldn’t it all be the same price? Not if your budget is a little tight, or you’d rather only run to the supply store once. The calculator will take care of the math, translating the jumbled measurements into obvious board counts. Let them crunch those numbers while you figure out if that cedar color realy works against your roofline.
Confusing the coverage area with the board size is one of the most frequent mistakes people make. For example, just because it’s a six-inch cedar board doesn’t mean it cover six inches of wall. Because there is an overlap (called the head lap) between each board, it conceals the joint beneath it and prevents water from getting behind the boards. Depending off the profile you select, this overlap could be an inch or even more. Thus, although the board itself measures six inches long, what vertical space it actualy claims is only about four and a half inches.
Why Measuring Siding Is Tricky
Half an inch may seem like nothing until you multiply that difference by thirty courses across two thousand square feet. Now you don’t have quite enough material to close the gap at the top of your gable. Everything is about exposure. That means exposure determine how many courses (or rows) you’ll need from the foundation up to the trim. The software will show you that as well: it calculates board counts based on total area. So you type in your wall lengths and take away the windows and doors, but then you’ve got those pesky triangles where the wall meets the roof (known as gables). Since the siding run at an angle over those, they’re a pain. They leave you with scrap pieces that never seem to fit anywhere. For gable work, most installers tack on an additional waste factor of ten to fifteen percent. Sounds wasteful, I know. But it prevents you from stopping halfway up the side of your house with one course left to go.
It’s also important to remember fasteners and trim pieces, which are often overlooked…until they’re gone. When calculating your screws/nails, take into account the space between studs. Most houses is framed with standard 16 inch centers. That means that for each board, you will be driving one fastener through each stud. In high wind areas or if you are using wider boards, sometimes you’ll double up on fasteners per stud. This option can absorbs within the calculator so that you aren’t underestimating how much of a hardware box to get.
Another item many folks forget to measure for is corner trim. Yes, you cannot simply stop siding at the corner. Without something called J-trim (or corner posts), there would be no clean edge nor any way for the boards to expand/contract. By measuring them by their height, you ensure you have enough length to cover from top to bottom without having to splice anything awkwardly.
The materials also makes a big difference in the logistics. Vinyl is flexible and easier to install, though it does expand and contract as temperatures fluctuate. That means leaving a bit more space between nail heads than you would when installing wood. Fiber cement boards are solidly built but brittle. If you bend one, it snaps in half. This means you have to be careful with how you cut it and set up good dust control. Engineered wood is sort of in-between, being stable but not susceptible to rot like natural lumber. Its weight and how it handles will also affect who you need to help you on-site.
Take one more lap around and look at everything before you purchase. Check out the current siding condition, the vents, the soffits. Take some measurements of those hard-to-reach areas where the roof meets the wall. Make notes of all the nooks and crannies that need custom cuts. Plug those in to the estimator to see what they do to the overall numbers. You want to cover the house, sure. You also should of had enough material to get the job done right without buying too much that ends up being wasted. It’s about respecting the exposure, accounting for waste, and believing in the math rather than your gut. Each inch matter when you’re staring up from the ground at a house which was built course by course.
