Every kitchen has a can opener. It’s so hard to open a can without them. Now we even have electric can openers, like the ones offered by Kitchen Mama.

These come with their own level of convenience since they cut so easily. But, what if that’s not always the case?

What if your Kitchen Mama can opener isn’t cutting when you needed it to? Here are the reasons why it could happen and the possible fixes to solve your Kitchen Mama can opener problems.

3 Reasons A Kitchen Mama Can Opener Is Not Cutting

  1. Incorrect Placement

Even though electric can openers like Kitchen Mama’s make the job much easier, they aren’t completely automatic. At the end of the day, they’re still tools, and their use depends on the user.

What I’m trying to say is, like any tool, these things need care. Using the wrong technique for the wrong thing will cause issues. In this case, it may just be the reason why your can opener is not cutting!

If you’re a new user, it’s a really common mistake to make. These things are a bit different from manual can openers after all, so it’s easy for beginners to struggle a bit at the start.

properly place the can opener

See what I’m doing in the picture up there? The lid of the can needs to go between the opener’s metal knob and blade. The edge of the blade should be leaning against the lid.

This way, the tool latches onto the can and starts cutting through the lid. In short, make sure you’re doing the right thing before troubleshooting further, as it’s important to rule out.

  1. Can Size Complications

The size of the can matters when you’re using Kitchen Mama can openers, or most electric can openers in general. That’s because of how these tools function.

The size of the can matters when you're using Kitchen Mama can openers.

When you place them on a lid, they’re supposed to latch on top of it properly. This is harder for these openers to do when you place them on a can that’s too small or has comparatively deeper grooves.

That’s because the technique you’re using has to be adjusted for their different shape and size. Otherwise, the tool just doesn’t latch on, and as a result, it doesn’t cut through the can either.

Take a look at my Kitchen Mama can opener, and the different cans I have in the image below. Notice how they all have different grooves along with their different sizes.

The way to handle this is to change how you use the tool. In this case, you need to do that by pressing the top part of the can opener down, and raising the handle part upward.

This tilts the can opener and makes the blade sit at an angle where it can latch onto the can’s lid. That allows proper cutting, and should fix this issue for you!

  1. Is The Blade Fine?

The blades on any can opener don’t last forever, including Kitchen Mama’s. They eventually get dull with use, and that leads to worse operations as time goes on.

This isn’t something you can prevent, since all blades lose their edge eventually. But, unlike a lot of tools that let you replace the blade, Kitchen Mama can openers do not.

There are major safety concerns as improper assembly can lead to serious injuries. As a result, the company has made it so that you can’t replace the blade, even when it goes bad.

Check for any rusting on the mechanism I highlighted above. Is there any other kind of chipping or damage? If you notice anything wrong, that means the blade is no longer fit for use.

So, if the blade on your Kitchen Mama can opener isn’t cutting through anything, you’ll have to buy an entirely new opener to amend this.
