Freeing a Hammer Drill Bit Stuck in Concrete

Learn how to remove a masonry bit embedded in concrete.

This happens more often than you’d think. The masonry bit has gotten stuck into concrete and pulling with your hands doesn’t work. It’s wedged in place. How do you get it back out? How do you do it without breaking something else?

First safety, always have eye protection on for the whole time you’re working. Here’s how to pull one out systematicly.

Watch out for flying concrete chunks

First, set your hammer drill on hammer only (no rotation). Oddly, having it spin will make the bit grip harder. What you need is a bit that vibrates. Engage the hammer mechanism and hold the trigger down as you work.

While the tool vibrates, rock it back and forth. Move the drill up and down on the wall. This loosen whatever is gripping the bit and helping you get it out of there. So don’t be afraid to take your time.

Now go rock the bit. If it doesn’t come loose, proceed to Step 2. At this point you want to completely separate the drill from the bit. Use the hex key provided to unscrew the chuck. Then, pull the body of the drill off the jammed bit. This will give you more options different than if the drill is still attached.

Now you have a stationary bit stuck in the wall. Grab a separate chisel bit for your tool and insert it into the hammer drill. You are going to use the chisel to break the concrete around the stuck bit.

You’ve now got yourself a bit firmly embedded in the wall. Get another bit (chisel bit for the hammer drill) and pop that into place. Time to get cracking with the chisel. Break up the concrete around the stuck bit.

Set the drill back to hammer mode. Position the chisel near the edge of the stuck bit and strike the surrounding concrete.

Now set the drill back to hammer mode. Place your chisel up against the stuck bit and hammer on the concrete that surrounds it. You’re trying to crack the concrete that’s holding onto the bit. Crack into the hard stuff surrounding it and loosen its grip. Keep hitting if you don’t have any luck yet.

After you’ve chipped away enough concrete, you’ll notice that the bit will be loose. It will wiggle around a little. Get a pair of pliers. Now, grab the exposed section of the drill bit as tightly as you can.

Don’t just yank it out by hand; you’ll need to rock, detach, and chisel it out.

Don’t panic: It’s supposed to come out like this; it was chiseled most of the way through. All you’re doing now is giving it the last bit of leverage to pop out.

Inspect your bit. Normal wear and tear will be obvious. It may be dull or even damaged. It’s now out. How does it work?

Why does this trick work? Because it solves the problem at its source. The bit is stuck by friction and debris. By chipping away the friction points, we loosen the debris with vibration. Pulling it all together makes it go home.

The thing is, folks want to spin it out. But that won’t work because the bit is already binding harder. You have to hammer, no turning necessary.

Then when you rock the tool, you add multiple directional forces. Pliers give mechanical advantage. And each one builds on the next.

Don’t forget the eye protection! It’s bad when concrete flies at your face. And don’t skip the step of chipping it out if rocking it doesn’t work. There’s no way this bit is coming off with sheer willpower…you gotta break its bond.

It is not a quick fix and it takes time

Not super fast but definitely not instant gratification.

Remove the bit. Set it back in place. Adjust settings. Check. Use only the hammer. Rotation is the enemy. Don’t enable that. Pull. Chisel. Detach. Rock. Trigger. Repeat.

Free the bit. Learn a lesson. Next time use the correct tool for the job, concrete grabs hold of things realy good. Fight back with the right technique.
