Have you had one of those days with your EGO 56V battery where it won’t work? It won’t hold a charge and the tool won’t run at all. Don’t go out and buy another pack just yet. Sometimes quick reset is all it takes.
There isn’t anything wrong with the battery physically and nothing looks amiss on the label; there’s no cracking or anything like that. It’s a 56V battery and we’ve heard that resetting them can help. All you’ll need is the battery. No extra tool required here.
Step By Step Reset Guide
There’s a circular power button in the center of the battery’s face surrounded by a ring of lights. Normally, these lights displays your remaining charge. But they’ll also tell you what’s going on. Because if you get the button presses incorrect, nothing will happen regarding the reset process.
Here’s the trick: Press, and then press again, and then press yet again. Except don’t let off too fast on the third press. Hold it down. Don’t let go. Not until lights respond. That one feels odd, and at first I didn’t do it. But then I tried and followed through, and sure enough: It worked.
While this is going on, your finger remains pressed against the button. The button will react with its LED ring. Depending on the model, either all of them lights up together, or they turn on one after another. If all the lights turns on, each one shows that it is resetting internally.
It’s waking up its electronics and it’s time to be patient. Don’t rush it here, because if you let go prematurely, the whole thing fails. Wait for all of those LEDs to glow brightly before releasing.
And then all those lights come on. And so it was successful. Because the lights show you! There’s no guessing if it did or didn’t work; the lights shows you right away that the system has restarted itself. Like resetting a computer, only for your power tool battery.
That’s some pretty good engineering: one simple user interface and no code to remember. Push the button down until all the lights come on then release. The lights will stop blinking and change to show they’ve finished their task. The lights go out or stay steady. There are no odd sounds. There is no smoke. It goes back to normal. The battery appears as good as new.
Not all EGO batteries is created equal. There are some where the LED lights turn green during the reset process. There are also some where they turn yellow when doing so. Different types of batteries will result in a different color.
If your pack is black and green like most, the lights will be green as well. But if you’re sporting an old unit like I was, then it could be different. Yellow isn’t necessarily bad. It’s just different. So don’t worry about the color itself. Instead, concentrate on what the pattern say. The key step is: press, press and hold.
The reset works. After you check the battery again, the lights return to normal standby mode, indicating it’s good to go. You plug it in and it grabs on right away. Before the reset, the battery actualy refused to charge. Now it sucks down juice like normal.
Great; the reset worked and you didn’t waste your money buying another one. This experience supports the idea that resetting an appliance should of been attempted before replacing any part. If there’s a simple fix, why not give it a try?
