Staggering your boards distributes the stress of the butt joints so that no single weak point runs parallel to another. Running your seams directly opposite one another create a ladder effect (one board moves different than the next) and can result in a trip hazard or uneven settling. Instead, try breaking that up to distribute strength of the deck evenly over all joist bays.
This doesn’t just make it look more planned and less rushed; it is also about making sure structure is strong. But there’s also a bit of math involved in this design, once you factor in amount of space required between boards (to expand and drain) and the fact that boards shrinks during drying. Then there’s the matter of their true face width (not always the same as their nominal width when you buy them from the lumber yard). Composite materials don’t shrink with lost moisture but actualy expand with increased heat. And with pressure-treated pine, those gaps will change as wood dries out over its first year.
How to Stagger Deck Boards
All of these spacing factors dictate where your butt joints should falls, and also how many rows can be packed into a given width of deck. This takes all of the boring spreadsheet calculations out of it (as long as you input your materials and dimensions into the calculator, up top). This is where people mess up at home: they throw away their three-foot offcuts only to find that those would of perfectly begun the next row. By tracking them and using them again later, you save money AND reduce waste without compromising on sturdiness. Finally, the tool includes various staggering options. From basic halves-together rows to intricate thirds-repeat-thirds patterns, you can choose how much offsetting you want between rows.
Thirds are a common favorite because they break eye’s pattern just enough but still leave the cuts small enough that even a DIYer can handle it. You should think about board length when planning your overall layout. Longer boards requires less seams. Fewer seams = fewer opportunities for weak spots, plus they just look better. On the other hand, longer boards is heavy, prone to cupping, and harder to manage without help.
Sixteen foot boards are a popular “sweet spot” for residential decks because they allow for fewer seams while still being easy to install. If your deck run is longer than your longest stock, then yes, you’re going to have joints. The trick is to make sure these joints lands squarely on top of a joist and are spaced away from adjacent row seams by at least a couple of feet, preferably three. Why? Because this keeps you from creating huge rectangles that may bend independently.
Your choice of materials also determines how you will fasten. For example, pre-drill hardwoods such as ipe to keep them from splitting.
