Anyone who uses Hamilton Beach can openers knows how convenient these things are. I have one too, and there’s no doubt about it being a good tool for any kitchen.

But, even the best tools act up every now and then. I’ve seen people complain about some issues often, and I’ve also run into some myself while using this thing.

So, I want to share those issues with you today by talking about common Hamilton Beach can opener problems and how you can go about troubleshooting them.

Troubleshooting 5 Common Hamilton Beach Can Opener Problems

  1. Can Opener Not Turning On

Taking care of any tool in the kitchen is important. It’s a busy environment that has a lot of things going around all the time. That makes it easy for things to fall, break, shatter, and all that.

It’s also possible for something like this to happen to your Hamilton Beach can opener. When that happens, the tool might stop turning on even when you plug it into a working power source.

So, what could be the reason for yours not turning on? Well, for starters, I want you to remember if the tool fell anytime recently. Maybe there’s internal component damage because of that.

But, even if the tool didn’t fall or come into a damaging impact like that, the cord is one thing to watch out for. The power cord on your tool might be why it’s not turning on.

You can see the cord for my Hamilton Beach can opener in the image up there. It’s working perfectly for me and even looks just fine.

I want you to check if yours is the same way. Maybe it twisted in a way that caused damage. It’s also possible that high temperatures fried some of the internal wiring.

If there’s anything wrong with the power cord, the tool won’t be able to turn on.

  1. Uncleaned Blade Mechanism

without regular cleaning, things start to build up behind or around the blade.

An unclean blade mechanism is really common for Hamilton Beach can opener users. That’s because many of them don’t know that this mechanism requires regular cleaning.

So, without regular cleaning, things start to build up behind or around the blade. When that build-up reaches a large enough point, it starts ruining the blade’s function.

You can tell when this happens whenever the blade sticks to one place when trying to cut a can, or when it doesn’t spin at all despite the device being on.

clean around the blade

Inspect your Hamilton Beach can opener around the area in the picture above. Can you see a lot of dirt or something else that could be stopping the mechanism?

Well, even if the answer is no, I still recommend that you use a cloth to clean well around that area. Use a cloth and your fingers to get into tight areas and remove clots of dirt if they’re forming.

  1. Hamilton Beach Can Opener Not Cutting

Earlier I talked about how dirt can affect the way a Hamilton Beach can opener cuts. So, we already know one reason why the tool might not be cutting for you.

The lid should be making contact with the blade

But, there are other causes for something like this happening to the can opener. One example is an error on the user’s end. Some place the can incorrectly, which ruins how the tool cuts.

This happens because incorrect placement stops the blade from making proper contact with the lid. That ruins its cutting power and stops the can from opening.

This usually happens with cans that are smaller in size. The main reason for this is smaller cans being harder to place since they can’t sit on the opener and reach the blade at the same time.

In cases like that, you have to suspend the can in the air and use the lock mechanism to hold it up.

The same goes for cans with deeper grooves since you have to adjust them manually. Push them upward so that the blade is directly touching the lid.

Some place the can incorrectly, which ruins how the tool cuts.

  1. Motor Complications

Always keep your Hamilton Beach can opener far away from the water. That’s because if even a bit of water or other liquids seep into the tool, they might come into contact with the motor inside.

The motor is what powers your Hamilton Beach can opener. It spins the right gears to operate the blade mechanism and lets your Hamilton Beach can opener cut through anything.

But, if water gets inside the motor, that’ll cause a short. This will cause it to lose all its function and power. As such, there won’t be anything powering the other mechanisms of the tool.

The blade will no longer spin, and that also means it’ll no longer cut. Unfortunately, there’s nothing to be done about a motor if it goes bad.

You’ll have to buy a new Hamilton Beach can opener. It’s not worth it to get repairs or replacement parts, since that’ll cost you as much as a brand-new model in most cases.

Always keep your Hamilton Beach can opener far away from water.

  1. They Don’t Last Long

The most common problem for any Hamilton Beach can opener is age. These things aren’t built to last long. A lot of users think that’s intentional so that people buy more and more.

But, regardless of reason, the truth is that these tools don’t last for much longer than a year. A year is usually how long their warranty lasts, and after that, they start to show signs of obsoletion.

Components inside of Hamilton Beach can opener start to develop complications. Eventually, these complications reach the point where it’s impossible to use these tools to open cans.

The reason why I’m telling you about this and including it in my troubleshooting list is simple; there’s not much point in looking for solutions if your old Hamilton Beach can opener is showing issues.

It’s always going to happen to every user after a year or two of regular use. So, instead of troubleshooting or repairing the tool, I suggest getting a completely new one if yours is quite old.

  1. My Hamilton Beach can opener is over 25 years old. I have always kept it very clean but today it stopped working. I loved the knife sharpener and the bottle opener on the back. I have loved this can opener for decades, may it rest in peace.
