💡Layout tips

Measure openings as rectangles. Subtract the rough door and window area, then keep enough waste for small cut pieces around trim returns.
Balance the first and last spaces. If a wall width leaves a narrow end bay, adjust batten spacing slightly before fastening the first strip.
Safety note: Always wear appropriate eye, hearing, respiratory, and fall-protection equipment when cutting or installing siding. Follow local code, flashing rules, wind-load requirements, and the siding manufacturer fastening schedule.

From the road, board and batten siding appear straightforward: just vertical stripes of wood (or fiber cement) with thin banding between them. For a hundred years, this pattern has been synonymous with farmhouse style. It’s a bold, clean look but one that can be difficult to estimate correctly.

Often people purchase materials based off the face area, then discover mid-project that they’ve failed to allow for any batten at all. Or worse yet, they neglect to factor in trim surrounding windows… Or those pesky triangular remnants when they cut their gables into place.

How to Estimate Your Siding Materials Correctly

This online calculator take the guesswork out of measuring; all you need do is input the length and width of your walls plus your preferred layout. That way, you’ll know exactly how much batten strip go onto a thirty-foot long wall without having to wing it.

To get the estimate, the main point is knowing how much net siding area you have versus how much siding you will need all told. Boards are more traditional looking but require much more work. Each board need a batten across the adjacent seam. This means you will need more vertical strips when boards is narrower. The ratios for this are listed on the page in the reference tables. So you can see the difference that a 24 inch rhythm makes different than a 12 inch center spacing in terms of materials used.

The biggest miss is with the battens. These are long skinny pieces that appears unimportant until you do the math on how many you need. A 2,000 square foot wall would have at least one batten every 16” over its length. That’s why the linear feet are totaled by the calculator. If you have gable ends or extra slopes in certain areas, those matter too, as does the number of fasteners used to secure everything tightly against the sheathing or studs.

This is no longer about purchasing siding but rather a system of lapped component that must be effective at shedding water. There’s also one additional sneaky expense it can help visualize: trim allowance. Whether it’s door sills, window headers, or corners, they all require some kind of framing or capping to complete the look.

By entering your measured linear feet into the trim input field, you’re sure not to run dry on corner posts or J channel at the project’s end. It sounds like small change accounting. However, being out of trim create a color matching nightmare later on, as different batches vary slightly with each production run.

Finally, there is the layout priority. You can use the tool to maximize seam minimization, or maximize batten count vs. Coverage. This shows actual design trade-offs in the real world. Fewer battens mean lower material costs and also fewer chances for water to get in if the flashing fails. More battens equal a tighter visual texture which some designs require.

This isn’t a right/wrong situation. It’s just a question of how much you want to spend versus the visual fullness you desire. The numbers change to reflect this, giving you an accurate idea of what that look really costs before making the initial cut.

If you do this upfront, before going shopping (you’ll get the numbers right), saving yourself from a panicked supply run and having a smoother installation overall. It will turn your vaguely defined scope of work into a concrete shopping list. You’ll precisely know how much to purchase, how much to account for waste, and where every dollar is being spent.

Knowing that is more valuable than the few minutes it would of take to type numbers into a spreadsheet.
