
Welding symbol charts are a language unto themselves, one that you have to learn how to read. They’re your way of communicating with other technicians and engineers onsite. It use symbols instead of speech.
Depending upon how well you interpret the reference line, you can build something that lasts 50 years, or it fail an inspection. Precision communication is what matters.
How to Read Welding Symbols
Below is a breakdown of what each part of this symbol mean. It’s all laid out in the right order. The basic line represent the line of reference. The arrow show us the point at which we will be welding (the joint). When we see the symbol above the reference line, we weld on opposite side. When it’s below we weld on the side the arrow touches. This make a difference because some folks think they weld the symbol where the metal is. Knowing it’s where it falls on the line matter for the structure.
There are different types of grooves. Also included in the chart is a description of different types of grooves. There are U, J, Square and V-grooves. Each have a use. Which one you choose depend on thickness of your material and how much stress it will see. Thin materials (plates) is good for a square groove where you can access the root with no problem. For thicker stuff, a bevel or v-groove are more common. That way you get full penetration but don’t waste to much filler metal in the process.
According to the infographic there are other dimensions such as groove angle and root opening to consider. These is not random numbers either. They’re calculated based off controlling the amount of heat going into the joint and minimizing distortion. Get this part wrong and you’ll warp the piece or cause cracks which are costly to correct down the line.
Fillet welds are common in general fabrication. How does it work? What is an effective throat measurement and what is the size of the legs? That’s where the reference guide comes into play.
First you’ll see the leg is always going to be larger than the throat. This is because there is a fixed proportion governing the leg/throat relationship to achieve strength. Many people get hung up on the leg size but forget about the throat. The throat is actualy the key dimension when considering the shear strength of the weld. So the chart help you visualize the relationship. You see as the leg gets bigger the throat get bigger. It’s all about making sure the weld looks big but more importantly has ability to take the load based on the inside geometry.
The position of welding add another dimension to the symbol. Overhead positions are listed with codes like 1G and 2G. Flat is an easy place to weld. Overhead takes a different skill set to get the contour and penetration correct. The symbols show the holding of both the torch and the body of the welder. This makes sense of why a symbol can appear simple on paper yet be hard in the real world.
Knowing the position are essential for the fabricator. This also allows you to plan out the proper technique and equipment.
Additional symbols provide field work and finish directions. A field weld is indicated by a flag. It’s assembled on site instead of the shop. That alters how they approaches quality control. Contour symbols specify if it’s welded flush or left convex. That’s where disagreements between welders and engineers come into play. It gives clarity on what the finished surface is supposed to be. It’s a translation chart of those expectations.
It does take time to master the symbols. Once you get it, though, it’s easy. That’s because there’s some sort of logic behind the symbols. The chart breaks it down and puts the information in an understandable format. It takes the guessing out of what things mean. And once you’re able to read them like the back of your hand, it doesn’t look like lines and squiggles anymore; it looks like instruction.
That distinction is what makes for a good welder versus a great welder. What was once a jumble becomes a straight-forward plan, which lets you create something durable.
You should of known that welders needs to study these charts. Modernwelding can be difficult if you don’t understand the symbols. One must recieve training to become an expert.
