Many times when you think about replacing your roof, you envision an area problem. You go out with a tape measure and measure footprint, thinking that’s all there is to it. It sounds easy, right?
Well a flat measurement doesn’t give you a clue to what you’re realy buying. There is hips and valleys. There is also a slope. Gravity pulls that material into tricky shapes that create waste.
How to Use a Roofing Calculator
That’s why a detailed estimator are needed here. It allows you to control the cost and gives you peace of mind.
What throws most do-it-yourselfers is geometry. That’s where calculator does its job. Begin by entering your plan view dimensions of length, width, and pitch factor (commonly 6/12). The calculator apply a pitch factor to account for slope of your roof. A 6/12 pitch amounts to almost twelve percent more surface area then a flat footprint would indicate.
If you don’t account for this multiplier you’ll be short of material half-way up the ridge. Enter your flat numbers, get back your sloped reality. Buy according to what needs covering, not what it appear to be from the curb.
Waste is another huge part of your budget. Straight runs and a simple gable roof will result in eight to ten percent of your material being cut away and trimmed. If you change to a hip roof or add a dormer it goes up to twelve to fifteen percent. If you have complex roof lines with multiple valleys you could be looking at losing twenty percent of bundles in the dumpster.
With this estimator you can account for that complexity. You can dial it back to make sure you aren’t shorted come time to put shingles on. It requires you to deal with geometry ahead of time before signing the purchase order.
And then there’s the stuff that ties it all together: accessories. Most of the attention go to the field shingles themselves. Underlayment, ridge caps, and even starter strips also comes with their own rate of coverage. Ridge cap come on a bundle that typically covers roughly twenty-five linear feet. Not square footage like the field shingle.
Underestimate how long your ridges and hips are and you’ll be making an extra trip or two to the hardware store. Buying single bundles at a time is also usually more expensive based off the square foot. With this tool, those figures is distinct.
How many starters? How many caps? How much felt? Now you know exactly what to order… No guesswork required.
The second consideration is what material? Standard architectural shingles typically run about three bundles per square (or thirty-three square feet each). Designer dimensional shingles or heavy laminates is generally going to be thicker/heavier and go on at four or five bundles per square. If you don’t put the correct coverage rate into the calculator, you’ll be out by a third on your bundle count.
With this estimator, you can choose exactly which shingle profile you have. And it know how that impacts the math. Little thing, but avoids the issue of discovering too late that instead of getting twenty boxes like you thought, you really would of needed double that.
Nails matter for wind resistance, though people tend to think about them as an afterthought. According to most building codes, there must be between six and eight nails per shingle. There is three hundred twenty nails per square. In other words, if your roof is steep… Or if you’re in an area with high winds (you may require even more).
The calculator’s got an estimate for the number of nails needed (based on how many squares you enter). It’ll help you purchase enough fasteners to get you through the last pass. This detail makes all the difference between a patchwork effort and a pro job.
