Layout tip: Staggering is strongest visually when adjacent butt joints are separated by at least two joist bays and the same seam line does not repeat in the next few rows.
Cutoff tip: A starter piece is most useful when the remaining cutoff can start a later row while still landing the next butt joint on a joist.
Always wear appropriate safety equipment. Never exceed the maximum rated RPM of your saw blade, router bit, or cutting tool. Confirm local deck code, manufacturer spacing requirements, joist support, hidden fastener rules, and railing load paths before installation.

Staggering your boards distributes the stress of the butt joints so that no single weak point runs parallel to another. Running your seams directly opposite one another create a ladder effect (one board moves different than the next) and can result in a trip hazard or uneven settling. Instead, try breaking that up to distribute strength of the deck evenly over all joist bays.
