Joint thickness matters: moving from a 3/8 in joint to a 1/2 in joint can raise mortar demand noticeably because every bed and head joint grows across the whole wall.
Dry materials are not wet volume: loose sand, cement, and lime compact when mixed, so the calculator applies a dry-volume factor before splitting the mix ratio.
Safety note: Wear eye protection, gloves, sleeves, and a dust-rated respirator when handling cement, lime, or dry mortar. Follow the mortar manufacturer's exposure guidance and never use a mortar type that conflicts with the brick or structural specification.

The mortar holds the bricks together.
