2×8 Floor Span Chart

In any house construction, there comes a time when looks collide with reality. The plan has been made, the floors are picked and the layout is set. Then you see what you’re dealing with. Some lumber that needs to bridge a distance alone. Typically, builders use a 2×8 for this purpose, but as with all things lumber, appearances are not always what they seem. To know just how far one of these beams will stretch, you need to dig deeper beneath the surface, beyond the nominal dimension and look into numbers.

Spanning The chart above shows the maximum spans for 2×8 lumber by grade and species, adjusted for spacing from twelve to twenty-four inches on center. If you think that all 2×8’s are alike, think again. A No. 2 Hem-Fir can span nearly two feet less than a Select Structural Southern Yellow Pine at sixteen-inch spacing. 2 Hem-Fir can only span about half as far as a Select Structural Southern Yellow Pine at sixteen-inch spacing, nearly two feet less. That makes a difference when you don’t want an additional support beam.

How to Install 2×8 Lumber Correctly

The closer together you space them, the farther they’ll go, but that increases both labor time and cost. Sixteen-inches is most common among builders because it finds a nice balance between efficiency and performance. At that distance apart, a standard No. 2 Douglas Fir-Larch won’t deflect to much beyond its span (about thirteen feet), give or take.

Comfort matters because of floor deflection. Just because structure of a floor is strong doesn’t mean that the floor will also be comfortabley to stand on (and walking around). For example, without understanding how stiff the floor needs to be, designer might make a floor that’s as springy as a trampoline. The reference guide says that we shouldn’t let a joist deflect more than its span divided by 360 when subjected to live loads. That ensures the floor remains quiet and solid. Exceed that limit and even before you notice any sagginess, you’ll feel the vibration in your feet each time you take a step. It’s not just about strength, it’s about livability.

Span numbers aren’t everything. How it’s installed makes all the difference. One no-no is failing to account for crown of the lumber. The little bow in 2×8s goes up; not down. As the load sets onto the flooring, gravity flattens that bow. Install it backward however and you’ll have permanent humps that no amount of underlayment can mask. Before anybody spots the problem with the span chart, you’re going to get some complaints about unevenness.

Another key thing to remember is bearing length. Joist should of have at least 3 inches of bearing on masonry, and an inch and a half on wood beams. Less bearing means less contact which leads to rotation and later failure under heavy loads.

The other issue that gets overlooked until something goes wrong is moisture. For inside lumber like framing, you want the wood to dry to less than 19% moisture content. When the lumber is wet it will shrink while it’s drying out, causing gaps between your subfloor and nail pops. Fixing gaps caused by shrinkage is a pain. But worse, if you cut out holes or notches for wiring, you are weakening the beam substantialy. There are rules about where you can do this, no more than one inch from either end, and at least within the outer two thirds (away from the middle third) of the span. Staying within these guidelines ensures a stiff and safe floor.

A good floor is built on patience and precision rather than just raw strength. If you respect the species grade of your wood, space it correctly and install so that the crown is up, then your home will feel solid. The small bow in the wood helps it settle into proper position, creating a flat surface that will last for many years.
