
And so there you are, standing in an empty room, holding a tape measure, staring at a span that seems like maybe it’s a little bit too much. “Do you want two-by-eights or two-by-tenels on your floor joists?” the builder says. Depending on what you choose, the new addition will feel solid or bouncy.
And no: This isn’t just about avoiding collapse. This is about day-to-day comfort. Do you want to be able to walk across your floors without them squeaking even when you’re wearing socks? Do you want to worry about cracks in your wall because foundation shifted?
How to Build Strong Floors
The way two-by-eights work, whether they’ll sag and when, comes across in the infographic. The actual takeaway: learning about how wood works. And this is what the chart looks like… It details the range of distances available for each grade and type of wood.
The bedroom spans almost up to 18 feet with Southern Pine. It spans a foot (or two) less with Spruce-Pine-Fir. Why does that matter? Because if you’re purchasing lumber, you want to know what kind you’re getting. Softwood doesn’t necessarily look identical, check out the grade stamp, because there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.
Select Structural has fewer knots, so it can also span further before bending. If your plan require Select Structural, don’t use No.2. Don’t take that chance.
The numbers is for dry conditions. And they aren’t optional, they’re engineering limitations related to how much weight the floor can handle. Bedrooms has lighter loads. Sleep rooms have a reduced live load requirement (by the International Residential Code). Most likely, you’re not going to pack a bunch of people into your guest bedroom and throw a raging party. That’s why the joist can span an additional few feet. That means less steel beam spending. And that is reflected in the chart. Frame out a master suite and those two-by-eights will be a little longer than they would be in a great room. Check with your local inspector on what he or she considers.
The closer they are, the stronger it will be. Sixteen inch on center is better then twenty-four. That spreads the weight across more members. This puts less stress on each member.
One reason we space them out so far at twenty-four inches is because of cost. Less material is used. But a two-by-eight at sixteen inches can span further than one at twenty-four inches. There is a catch. More nails. It requires more joist. The reward? A stiff floor. Instantly you know when this is done right. There are no more spongy floors. It provides just solid footing.
Good design can be marred by installation details. If installed wrong, strong lumber will fail. Many times people forget about the crown. There is always a small amount of curve in every board. It needs to go up, meaning crown up. Over time the weight of the floor will straighten out the bow. If you put it crown down there is a permanent sag.
Also, make sure to check your bearing lengths. Your joists should not be crushed on the end. Not enough bearing and your wood gets compressed. More than that and you waste materials. Balancing them is part of the craft.
If you need to run wiring or plumbing, use the middle third of depth where the stress is lowest. Never cut big notches in the edges. That’s weakening it. The top edge is compressed. The bottom edge is under tension. Cut into one and you compromise the other. Always run plumbing or wiring through the middle third of its depth. There it’s least stressed.
Only use rated hangers. A joist nailed right to a rim board doesn’t count. The hanger spreads the cutting force. It holds the assembly together and keeps the floor stable. If properly installed it won’t shift.
Long spans are what engineered lumber is made for. Don’t break the code by trying to push a solid-sawn two-by-eight farther than it can go if your span requires more. Go with an I-joist or an LVL. They’re made for long spans. They’re straight as an arrow and predictable. Pushing a two-by-eight past its limit means failure. The chart marks where the line is. Honor that.
