Black & Decker 36v/40v Charger Lights Meaning

I have been working around Black & Decker for a long time now, it has been a big name with handy men for a while now.

The charger has saved me a lot of time and effort because it makes it very easy to keep track of what’s happening with the battery through the different light indicators.

Still, when I first started using it, the blinking lights made no sense to me at all, it was very confusing and more than once I had thought that the charger had stopped working when it was just giving me a warning of an error.

I also made a short video about this topic which I uploaded on my YouTube channel but you can also watch it down below.

Here’s what the different indicator lights mean: blinking green means the battery is actively charging, solid green means battery is fully charged, steady red blinking indicates a bad battery, and irregular red blinking triggers a hot/cold delay.

Black & Decker Charger Lights Meaning: Know Them for Easy Troubleshooting

Over time, I have learned what the blinking or steady colorful lights mean and it has made troubleshooting very easy. Here’s a guide to the light indicator:

Blinking Green Light

the blinking green light shows that the battery is healthy and charging perfectly.

This is the most common type of light that I have seen on the indicator, the blinking green light shows that the battery is healthy and charging perfectly.

Sometimes, it takes a few seconds for the green light to flash when the battery is plugged but once it starts flashing, it keeps on doing that till the battery is about 80% charged showing that it is a good time to take the battery off charging.

Solid Green Light

It means that the battery is now fully charged

Similar to the blinking green light, the solid green light also means that the battery is healthy and has no issues. It means that the battery is now fully charged and ready to take off charging.

Just remember to not let the battery stay on for a long time with this light on as it might lead to over charging.

Irregular Blinking Red Light

the battery temperature is not right

This one is more of an uncommon battery indicator but it has occurred to me from time to time. The irregularly blinking red light, meaning that the light is blinking but not in a set pattern means an error.

It indicates that the battery temperature is not right, either the battery is overheating too fast or not charging at all and staying cold.

It might be a battery issue so try inspecting the battery for any short circuit or damage and try charging another battery to test the charger too, you might need to replace the battery if it keeps showing the same issue even after resting it for a while.

Regular Blinking Red Light

Steady Red Blinking – Battery is faulty

This is another indicator that the battery is not doing great and might need inspecting.

The regular blinking red light means that the display light is blinking but at a steady pattern, which indicates that the battery is not functioning which sounds bad but it can be fixed with a simple reset.

I also have a short video about this topic and you can watch it below. On the video, I used another healthy Black & Decker battery to do the reset. I connected the two batteries together for around 15 seconds and it solved the issue.

And before I forget, I also made another short video in which I demonstrated the other 2 ways (so in total there are 3 ways you can do this) to reset you Black & Decker 36V/40V Battery. You can watch it below.

This is what I have learned from my time using the Black & Decker charger, I hope it makes more sense next time you see a blinking light on your charger.
