In a panic, the arc freezes to base metal and pulls your hand forward. You snap it back, twist the stinger and next thing you know, there’s a hole in the side of your piece of scrap steel and you’re holding a little burnt crater in your hand. Been there done that. Usually it isn’t because we didn’t try hard enough, its because we didn’t know exactly what rod to pick up first.

It’s easy to start, forgiving, and cleans its own slag off so you don’t have to worry about anything except how long your arc is and if your hand stays steady. In the beginning, people most often forget the amperage and diameter connection; here’s how to avoid weak beads or spatter: Keep the diameter of the electrode equal to the gap. For example, if you’re using an eighth-inch rod, maintain an arc about an eighth of an inch in length. Any longer and the arc becomes wobbly and introduces porosity into the weld. Shorter and you’re sticking. Weird, I know; you instinctively want to go harder to feel more grounded. But breathing means clean fusion.

The graphic reiterates that around ninety to one hundred amps is where you’ll be starting out practicing with an eighth-inch rod. Work your way up from there. Gray and frozen-looking? Bump it up ten. Volcano about to blow? Drop it down.

So, fast-forward some time where you’re welding with heavier stuff and you’ll want something stronger. Enter E7018, a low-hydrogen rod that gives you very structural weld that’s perfect for heavy plate and frames. Just be careful, it requires your respect. And if you don’t own one yet, just use the E6011 or E6013. They’re good all around rods and are a good compromise between the two. Also, if you’ve got rusty, dirty metal to deal with, the E6011 gets it done realy well and will handle AC power well too. Best friend on the farm.

On each pass, chip the slag. When left behind, slag contains inclusions, basically weak spots that hide within the weld.

A good weld has a consistent sound, a steady sizzle as if bacon were frying in a pan. Anything else, a roar or a crackle… Indicates something’s not right. Slow down, adjust your angle.

Welding is a conversation between the machine and the metal. You ask for heat; the metal answers by fusing together. Listen carefully and stop freezing the rod to the plate. Start laying beads.
