When you order brick veneer for your house, you know how many pieces to cover square footage of the wall so you can get look you want for your home’s appearance. But do you think about what holds the brick in place? Nope, you’re focused on the look. That’s where mistakes cost big bucks.

Veneer isn’t about covering area; it’s about dealing with moisture, wind loads, and the need for the brick to be structurally independent of its framing. More Than Just Bricks: Essential Building Tips

A few things to understand: A brick veneer wall is not simply a pile of clay blocks; it’s a system. An air gap (typically an inch or two thick)… Separate the bricks from structural backup wall. Why? Because if moisture gets into mortar joints, this gap permits it to flow out instead of soaking your sheathing and rotting it.

The tool takes into account net wall area (length times height minus areas around doors and windows). It also takes into account the waste allowance. That’s where 15 percent comes from on a heavily decorated facade and maybe 5 percent on a perfectly rectangular wall. The number isn’t a guess; it’s based off the short cuts required to keep your mortar joints straight at the edges plus some broken units along the way due to handling.

Estimates also go awry when not properly accounted for in corners. A regular flat brick does not make a corner by itself. You have to use corner units. These is either overlapping L shapes that butt up against face of wall, or interlocking units like these. The calculator requests total linear feet of outside corners (meaning the exterior-facing sides), which allows it to figure out how many of these specialty pieces will be required.
