💡 Calculation Tips

Hip cuts: A hip roof has more diagonal cuts than a gable roof, so 10-15% waste is common even on a simple rectangle.
Cap footage: Count every sloped hip line plus the flat ridge. A pyramid hip has no ridge, but it still has four hips.
Safety note: Roof work is fall-hazard work. Use proper fall protection, roof jacks, staging, footwear, and local code practices. Do not climb wet, icy, damaged, or overly steep roofs.

A hip roof has clean lines where slopes intersects on all four corners, which makes this style look nice from the road. But it takes longer to cut and also means that you’ll need a few more shingle. It’s pretty straightforward in terms of geometry (you could even sketch it out), but unless you pay attention to the math it will throw off your estimate of materials. So it’s important to nail down those numbers before the truck arrive with your materials.

While the calculator does all the work for you after you input dimensions, it helps to understand how the math works so you don’t end up running short (or storing excess) material: First up is the footprint. That’s your base line in real life. To calculate this, you’re simply going to measure across each of the outside walls from corner-to-corner, regardless off the overhang, to determine total raw square footage.

How to Calculate Roofing Materials for a Hip Roof

From there, the program uses a slope factor based on your entered pitch. Keep in mind that this cannot be changed. A 6/12 pitched roof covers FAR more space then you might think based off the square footage of your floor plan. If your roof isn’t flat, do not measure the surface your home sits on to purchase shingles.

This feature makes the calculator explicit about its treatment of overhang; it considers it a part of the full surface area requiring coverage. You don’t need to remember to manually add it later.

Bundles also differ from brand to brand in terms of materials covered, so be sure to check out the specs for your bundle when making your purchase. Typically, 33 sq ft is covered per bundle and three bundles equal one roofing square. You can adjust that if you’re going with something different than your average architectural shingle. That way you’ll end up with the correct number of bundles based off what’s actualy on the pallet.

The last component of this planning exercise is safety. Steeper pitches are trickier to work with and can results in higher waste. Go towards the high side of the waste scale if you’ve got a steep pitch to your roof. Better to have an extra bundle on the driveway than to send your crew back out while you wait for it.

A hip roof is ultimately triangles, triangles that deserve to be respected in their shape. The number of shingles isn’t all that matters; it’s also the respect for the cuts, for the caps, for the triangular waste inherent in diagonal lines. Respect the math, and the install goes smooth, and what you end up with looks as good as it did the moment you first tilted your head back and stared up at that slope.
