Marking tip: Snap or pencil one straight rail datum, then mark every picket center from the same end. Center marks are usually faster and more accurate than measuring every edge gap.
Adjustment tip: If the exact gap differs too much from the target, change the picket count by one and recalculate. A tiny gap change repeated across the bay is cleaner than one odd end space.
Safety note: Always wear appropriate eye, hearing, dust, and hand protection when cutting fence material. Never exceed the rated speed of saw blades, and verify pool, guard, and property-line requirements with local rules before installation.

The left side starts out great; then by post three the spacing get wider, and the pickets begin to wander from their perfect line. Why? Because math was abandoned for luck. Most measure one gap, hoping it will be the same every time until reaching end of board; forgetting that wood does not stay still, and neither do your posts nor your own hands. Before driving even one screw, you need to know what you’re measuring.

Why You Need a Fence Calculator

Don’t measure from post outside to post inside; your layout will be off by half a board width. Always measure between the inside faces of posts or the stiles of the gate. The outside looks like boundary, but the pickets live in negative space between them, it’s counterintuitive, but true.

The design decision: Function vs. Form So which do you choose? If you are realy going for privacy, you’ll opt for a tight gap between boards, like a quarter inch or even less, depending on the size of your wood. This results in a solid fence, one that stops both breeze and sightlines. But, keep in mind: Wood does expands and contract as it absorbs moisture from rain, so give it some breathing room. Otherwise it’ll buckle as it swells.

To figure out what’s right, check the chart on page. Compare stock width and ideal gap size, and then go with what sounds good! A three-and-a-half inch picket will look best with a two or three inch gap, whereas the five-and-a-half inch standard require barely any at all to maintain its privacy. Think of it as rhythm. A big board with no gap says, “heavy security.” A thin one with a lot of air surrounding it mean “decorative, airy.”

If you’re using pool barriers, here’s where it gets tricky: Since code generally requires pools to have no gaps larger than four inches (to keep little kids out), any gap that adds up to more than four inches wide won’t work. No fudging on this one. You’ll either have to change materials or adjust your pitch so that total doesn’t add up to anything wider then four inches.

To check this logic, the calculator flags anything that results in an opening size too large to assume someone won’t slip through. It doesn’t simply tally up number of boards, it computes how much open space remains relative to closed-off coverage. In other words, it checks whether your fence will realy block air flow or merely delay it.

Don’t overlook the waste factor: Wood isn’t perfect, so there’ll be cuts and splits and twists that make a perfectly good piece worthless. Ten or even 15 percent additional material gives you insurance against pausing mid-job with a picket short. The tool will tally up this excess at end, but it’s also a good idea to presort your stock, seeking out the most uniform color and straightest edges before nailing begins.

It’s easier and more accurate to measure only once by marking the center of each picket along a single straight line drawn on top of rail, rather than measuring every edge. After those lines are drawn, it’s simply a matter of hanging wood. You should of checked everything twice. Building a fence is half patience and half geometry.
