Measuring your house for vinyl siding is tricky because there are many small holes and shapes, like triangles and rectangles, that reduce total square footage. As a result, it’s easy to under-estimate how much siding you need. You end up wasting money on extra boxes and/or running out of material halfway through the project. A reliable estimate saves you from buying too little or paying for box you never open.
Instead of just measuring surface area, we counts courses in calculation. Once you input your dimensions into the calculator, it will do this math for you. You will no longer have to guess by dividing wall height by the panel exposure and then multiplying that by width. It also makes you think about waste sooner based off the project.
Why You Need More Siding Than You Think
For example, if you have a basic rectangle shaped home, maybe you’d leave yourself a 7% buffer (meaning you’d buy 107% of what you need). But if you have many different siding style or lots of dormers, maybe you should of leave a 15% buffer. Play around with this number as your layout gets more complex.
Because doors and windows take up so much of the wall surface, it’s critical to figure out their areas correctly (i.e., subtract them). On the other hand, those door and window cutouts form exposed edges, requiring some sort of J-channel trim to hide them. In fact, it’s not just the length of the wall that is important, but rather the number of openings, since each one will have its own perimeter of channeling. Underestimate the trim, and the installer might exhaust his supply of matching-profile pieces leaving unsightly butt joints or worse yet, gaps. How long are the various profiles of these accessories? The reference table on page provides standard lengths.
Another typical challenge involve gables. Since siding is installed horizontally, it is laid out line by line. A triangle… The shape of a gable, are half as big as the rectangle around it. You can’t put down half courses at the top, or else you’d have to cut each piece separately. Typically pros does the bottom to top thing, leaving the last course to fill what’s left over.
The estimator will figure out how many square feet of triangles the house has for gables. Then they will estimate how many panels it takes to cover those square feet, depending on your exposure setting. An exposed gable with insulation like a D6 only exposes six inches, whereas a double four clapboard expose eight. Same size wall, different number of panels required.
Starter strips and corner posts are frequently forgotten about until it’s time to get materials onsite. Corner posts connects each intersection. Starter strips run around the perimeter of the wall to seal out moisture from the base and help hold the first course in place. This is figured by linear footage + some leeway for scrap. Better to have leftover corner post than cut your last one short midway up a wall.
For instance, get on the same page with your suppliers by thinking in squares. A square is equal to a 100 sq ft coverage area. So if I estimated a room at forty-five squares, I know exactly where to be looking for my bundles. You can’t purchase half a trim piece or half a panel so each component gets rounded up. It’s better to be overprepared than underprepared.
Don’t use raw square feet: When ordering vinyl siding, you’re not simply working with raw square feet because there are other variables that will make your materials less than they seem. There’s waste, cut-offs, accessories… you have to account for all that. If you do that ahead of time, you’ll know how much you need and won’t be making multiple trips to the lumber yard. You don’t want to get there and realize your math is wrong because you forgot something like roof line trim. But if you know exactly what you need, you can write it down, grab everything, and go home with enough.
