Most homeowners approach a roof replacement with same nervous energy they bring to buying a house. They look up from driveway with shingles staring back down at them and wonder how much it will be. A roof is not a flat rectangle sitting atop your walls. It’s an angle plane that extends beyond footprint of building. Waste, trim, and other hidden costs emerges.
How long is this thing? This is no longer simply a math problem but more an art form. Fortunately, there are calculators like the one above that does the math for you. First it will ask what the footprint or the length and width of your roof are (as seen from above). This is significant because it sets size of space on your roof you need to cover with shingles. Because of the pitch, the true shingle-covered surface is always greater than the footprint. The higher the pitch, the more material needed to cover a given horizontal distance. To account for this, the roof calculator apply a slope factor that adjusts the base size accordingly.
How to Measure Your Roof Correctly
For example, if your pitch is a moddern 6/12, you’ll add roughly an additional dozen percent compared to how much roofing material you’d think you needed based off the footprint alone. That extra dozen percent represent actual material you’ll purchase and pay for. Now that we’ve got our surface area down, it’s time to talk waste. Waste is one line item in budget that isn’t open for negotiation.
Valleys, hips and ridges are places where shingles gets cut; those scraps don’t return to the box. Ten percent additional waste could be all a simple gable roof need. But with multiple intersections comes greater complexity. Complex designs like hip-and-valley can easily needs as much as 20 percent or more. Dialing-in this number using the calculator depend on the shape of your roof.
Overestimate waste by two percent, it’s better than running short and having to wait for another delivery. When you run short, you’re exposing your sheathing to rain and forcing the crew to stop work. The other thing that gets overlooked until ordering time is accessories. Starter strip guards against wind uplift on eave. Ridge caps must be installed at the peak where two plane meet. Drip edge metal directs water off of fascia and down to gutters.
Accessories like this are each measured by their length (linear feet) rather than by square footage, thus needing its own line item on your takeoff. Because we don’t want to mix up any of these, the tool break each of them out separately. You could run out of shingles for the main field but have no remnants left to trim into pieces for the hips. It is a small detail, but it keeps things rolling smoothly on the job.
Alongside the calculator, there’s a set of reference tables that will provide a little sanity check on what you’re putting in. These outline typical roof styles, their average waste factor, and some slope factors. For instance, a basic ranch-style gable is simple; a Dutch hip with multiple valleys adds more complexity, requiring you to allow more waste for mistakes. Check off these markers and make sure it feels like you’re estimating about as much waste as you should of be. If you think your waste estimate is below the table’s suggestion for your roof type, then recheck your cut points and valley lengths.
Know your size (About is a good estimate). Knowing precisely how much you will use of each material help you plan instead of guess. You won’t have to buy more than necessary “just to be safe” or order multiple times because you are under-supplied. Measuring your roof right the first time (the largest individual surface area of your home) saves you money and stress.
